R. Jean Vallières
The Painter

R. Jean Vallières creations demonstrate mastery of medium; they convey meaning, immediacy and depth. The value of his canvases is their capacity to strike both personal and universal chords, appealing to human emotion, memory, imagination and aesthetic feelings. Each canvas arouses the viewer’s memory consciously and unconsciously. His paintings communicate on a number of levels and are often open to interpretation. Each time the viewer returns, new variations of meaning are discovered. Each canvas is intended to stand the test of time and be appreciated over generations.

Mr. Vallières explores art almost exclusively with oils on canvas. Having begun his portrait painting career at age 13 in the cellar of his parents’ home in Woonsocket, RI, a mill town located along the Blackstone River, he furthered his learning while completing undergraduate, graduate and post graduate studies at New England colleges and universities. For several years, he studied and refined his techniques at well known art schools, where he studiously applied himself to color and technique – two passions that he elegantly incorporates into his portrait and landscape paintings.  Upon completing his formal education, Vallières studied the accomplishments of the Great Masters first hand at the National Gallery in London, Le Musee de Louver in Paris, and other acclaimed museums of Europe and the United States.

When asked to describe his personal approach to painting and his own style, he would reply that his approach is an “imaginative-curiosity”, and his style a balanced amalgamation of “European Neoclassical”, and new “American Realism.”

Mr. Vallières’ “Historical Americana” paintings stand without comparison.  He displays an un-previously attempted technique and color application that is uniquely attributable to the artist.
